Smoke Testing
Smoke testing is an inexpensive technique to identify sources of I/I and improper connections to the collection system. Smoke testing is performed by injecting white smoke into the sewer system using a blower system. Smoke escapes the system identifying potential sewer defects that would allow rain water to enter. Hydromax USA performs smoke testing using 4,000 CFM blowers and global positioning system (GPS) technology to locate and describe system defects. The handheld GPS units provide mapping grade coordinates and provide data forms to record detailed information about the defect conditions. GPS units are used to document thorough smoke coverage throughout the sewer system. This ensures that all pipe segments included in the scope are tested and any blockages are located.
Hydromax USA can provide Example Reports of Smoke Testing for your review and consideration.
More Details
Often surface water drainage is connected to the sanitary sewer system
creates overflows in wet weather conditions and adds expense due to
the treatment of such. Typical improper connections discovered during
smoke testing include gutter down spouts and drainage of surface waters.
Smoke testing uses a pressurized non-toxic smoke that is forced into the system using blowers located at a manhole. Ordinarily, both the line segment in either direction from a manhole is tested simultaneously.
When improper connections or breaks in the sewer are encountered, these defects will allow the smoke to escape to the surface where the Hydromax USA technicians observe, locate such on maps and record the details in reports. Smoke testing can also identify many restrictive conditions within the sewer lines.
Hydromax USA’s project managers and technicians ensure good
public relations through an extensive effort to notify home and business
owners of the impending work.
Prior to the smoke testing in a particular area, door hangers are distributed to notify residents and business owners what to expect during this procedure. This is an important part of the smoke testing process to minimize the calling of emergency vehicles to attend to what can appear to be a fire related issuance of smoke from around structures.
Hydromax USA experience with multiple field inspection techniques
assures you that we can provide you with unbiased recommendations for
selecting the right field inspection techniques to give you the maximum
information for selecting the best solution for your capacity, management,
maintenance and operational needs.
Smoke testing often raises the public's awareness of their sewer system. Informing of the residents and businesses is important to eliminate unwarranted concerns.
