Manhole Inspection

Manhole inspections are performed to help identify sources of Inflow & Infiltration (I/I) and to determine the structural condition of the manhole. Manhole inspections also help to verify or correct existing sewer maps. Hydromax USA uses GPS technology to perform manhole inspections and locate the positions of the manholes with sub-meter accuracy. The GPS locations make it easy to communicate and document that each manhole was inspected and the location was not confused with another manhole due to any difficulties in reading the map.

Hydromax USA can provide Example Reports of Manhole Inspections for your review and consideration.

More Details
Structural condition, Inflow / Infiltration potential and pavement interface of the cover and frame can be interpreted from manhole inspections. GIS mapping can be verified or created asset inventory and locations from collected data. The resulting information, supplied in a database format, can be used to summarize the rating of condition assessment and estimate cost of improvements.

Hydromax USA’s confined space certified field crews can record an inventory of each manhole including:

  • Construction materials
  • Ring size
  • Depth to pipeline invert
  • Flow conditions of the line including any surcharge indicators
  • Preliminary line cleanliness

The inventory information is recorded in any manner desired by the client. Hydromax USA can provide real-time direct data downloads to the client’s database, i.e. Hansen, MBA, etc., through wireless communication systems. This provides the fastest use of the inspection results. Hydromax USA collected information can also be supplied in various digital formats or even through hard copies Microsoft Access databases are often customized for the client.

The resulting information is used to update the decision making databases that are used to manage maintenance and repair programs.

Traditional methods for manhole inspections utilize simple observation by trained technicians and completion of forms together with photographs.

Advanced techniques include the use of ZOOM cameras that are remotely operated from a vehicle. The units use a telescoping lowering device, a high powered camera with a remotely adjustable zoom lens and powerful lighting. The zoom system allows for digitally recording the condition of the manhole as well as looking for a distance inside of the main pipe line. Please review the information under ZOOM for more details.

Hydrogen sulfide gases are present in sanitary sewers, causing constant deterioration of concrete structures. Inspections of your manholes can give you a condition status to plan for repairs.

Planning and early maintenance can save costs in the long run.

Street and highway traffic impacts on manholes constantly exert deterioration effects on manholes. I&I can be increased substantially as a result.

Manholes are exposed to freeze thaw cycles in northern climates that effect their long term performance and I&I potential.
