Fell 41 Leak Detector in Use |
FELL 41 • Focused Electrode Leak Locator
This advanced inspection method is a fast and accurate method to determine the integrity of gravity flow pipelines. The process provides for both determination of leaks but also quantifies the magnitude of the leak, the location of the leak and interprets the defect type.
The method starts with the placement of an electrode into the ground near the line segment to be tested. A tag line is then passed through the sewer and attached to a sonde which emits an electric current and a sliding pipe plug. Most often the use of a sewer jetting hose is used to act as the tag line.
The line is then filled to a depth that the joints are completely immersed with water. As the sonde is pulled through the pipeline at approximately 30 feet per minute, the emission of the electric current is recorded digitally and mapped in association with the linear position in the pipeline. The output is recorded and displayed digitally on a computer screen in real time.

When there are defects in the pipeline the electrical signal passes through the pipe more easily and a higher rate. The interpretation allows for correlation of the amplitude of the electric signal to the size (severity) of the defect. The signal is plotted on a basis of electric current strength vs. the longitudinal location with in the pipeline. Since the process is continuous, an unbroken line can be graphed. The pointed peaks graphs are distinguishable between joint leaks and lateral connections. Peaks having a flat top are determined to be longitudinal cracks.
Laterals location can also be determined from the results.
The leakage potential for a line is immediately determined. This is the only technology available today that is capable of identifying locations of infiltration in pipes where the ground water table varies.
The FELL 41 uses are:
- Immediate and accurate determination of the potential for leaks in dry weather
- Quantification of severity of leaks
- Locates the defect longitudinally
- Determines the likely type of defect causing the leak
- Excellent for new line quality control inspections
- Provides a superior result and more information that air testing methods\
- Provides for the capability to overlay surveys of the same line made at different times.
- Provides BASE LINE data with easy comparison of the condition of the sewer line as it ages.
- Hydromax USA experience with multiple advanced techniques assures you that we can provide you with unbiased recommendations for selecting the right field inspection techniques to give you the maximum information for selecting the best solution for your capacity,
- management, maintenance and operational needs.
- Did you know that the EPA CMOM program encourages the monitoring of your systems condition over time, Advanced technologies from Hydromax USA can be a big help in achieving these goals.
FELL 41 was developed in Germany and uses electric current for a repeatable examination of the watertightness of your system. It works extremely well for new system testing and accurately shows each defects location.
