CCTV Inspection

The purpose of this type of inspection is to determine:

  • Structural condition
  • Location of structural defects
  • Identify size and material of construction
  • Locate service laterals
  • Locate obstructions and sources of infiltration

CCTV uses a television camera mounted on a remote controlled, self-propelled robotic device that is connected to a video monitor typically located in a van.

The robotic system is inserted in a manhole and placed in the sewer to be inspected. Once inside the sewer, the remote control device moves through the pipe. As it moves, an operator watching the video monitor stops the camera at any type of defect or pipe condition change to get a more detailed inspection.

Internal CCTV inspection is a traditional method used to determine the exact nature of defects in pipelines. The method uses digital miniature cameras with lights that are located on robotic powered tractor transporters that travel through the pipeline. The camera unit is lowered into the invert of the sewer at a manhole.

The camera and tractor are controlled remotely from the surface by Hydromax USA's qualified technician having PACP training and certification. The technician operates the camera and tractor through the pipeline while recording a video of the inside of the line. When defects are observed, the operator stops the forward travel of the camera unit and utilizes the pan and tilt mechanism to bring the defect under closer observation while the video recording continues.

The operator records the observed defects into the computer system which places a description on to the recorded video and also places the description code into a digital database. The coding of such defects can utilize various industry standards or Hydromax USA can work with the client to develop a unique and specific code when desired.

Hydromax USA can provide real-time direct data downloads to the client's database, i.e. Hansen, MBA, etc., through wireless communication systems. This provides the fastest use of the inspection results. Hydromax USA collected information can also be supplied in various digital formats or even through hard copies. More typically data is provided in digital format on external hard drives, CD's or DVD's.

Since 2001, CCTV can be used in a more sophisticated arrangement to inspect mainlines and laterals from an additional equipment package. The system is known as LAMP - self-propelled Lateral and Mainline Probe.

A newer and more sophisticated technology for visual inspection of pipe lines utilizes the SSET system. Hydromax USA is the first company to utilize the Blackhawk SSET system in vehicles having multi capabilities of SSET and CCTV.

SSET Provides Simultaneous Frontal and Perpendicular Views
w/o Stopping - Constant Speed of 13 fps

The advantages of the SSET system when compared to CCTV are:

  • SSET provides superior ability for a higher quality repeatable analysis of a mainline sewer
  • It can provide measurement of crack width and length for quantifying defects
  • It provides an overlay capability that allows for precise historical comparisons when determining if a structural deterioration is continuing or if it is stable
  • It provides two camera views, one forward view and one perpendicular view
  • The perpendicular view is presented from a circular capture that has been laid out flat, much as a projection of a globe of the earth is portrayed on flat maps
  • The software allows for rapid and detailed review by professional engineers without the potential that the camera operator failed to stop to observe something as per a CCTV inspection
  • Engineer review and quality control review time is 1/6th that of CCTV when using SSET.

The advantages of CCTV when compared to SSET are:

  • LAMP-Lateral Launched from Mainline Pipe systems can be used with CCTV
  • LAMP systems, Lateral camera launched from the main line, can be piggy backed on a CCTV camera for lateral inspections.
  • CCTV units have pan and tilt type camera heads that allow for the operator to stop and look at details of a pipeline.
  • SSET is a system that offers better results than traditional CCTV camera systems.
  • SSET provides for overlays from one scanned visual image to the next, allowing good evaluation comparisons to better meet CMOM and GASB34 requirements.
